The Jarvis Cup (for men) is named after A. K. Jarvi, father of Michael, Roger and Kendal, a keen squash
supporter, and when he passed away in 1960, his family donated a trophy for an annual Inter-Provincial
tournament.
Following this, Cecil Kaplan (a South African player) and his wife Dorothy donated a similar trophy for
the ladies and this became known as the Kaplan Cup.
The first tournaments where held in 1960, Jarvis in Port Elizabeth and Kaplan in Johannesburg and for several years they were played apart but finally in 1968 sense prevailed and a decision was made to play both tournaments simultaneously and at the same venue.
The first one was played at the then Salisbury (now Harare, Zimbabwe) in July 1968 and was a great success, thereafter each year the competitions have been played in different centres every year.
