A INTRODUCTION
Section 1 General
1 Jarvis/ Kaplan Cup
1.1 The inter-provincial tournament comprises the Jarvis Cup (A section for
men): XXV Trophy (B section for men): Banana Bowl (C section for
men): Kaplan Cup ( A section for women): Ransome Trophy ( B section
for women): Silver Trophy (C section for women). For the past few years
there have not been sufficient entries for this C section.
1.2 The event shall be held each year during the second week of July.
1.3 The precise dates upon which the Tournament will be held will be
determined by the National Convention.
2 Venue
2.1 The Tournament will be hosted by an affiliated (provincial) Association in
the following rotation:

2 Criteria for Awards
2.1 The Best of the Rest
A team consisting of 5 players for both men and women – the best players in positions 1 –5 - other than the players in the respective winning teams shall be announced.
2.1.1 These teams shall be selected by a selection committee of 3, who
shall be those National selectors present at the tournament. Should
the National selectors not be present then those present shall co-opt
one or two members as the case may be to constitute a committee
of 3.
2.1.2 If no selectors are present at the Tournament then the Disputes
Committee shall nominate 3 persons to act as a selection
committee
2.2 Greg Hammond Trophy -The most promising male player.
2.2.1 This player is selected by the selection committee as mentioned in
2.1.1.
2.3 Lance Sibbald Trophy – The most improved male player.
2.3.1 This player is selected by the selection committee as mentioned in
2.1.1.
2.4 The Most Promising Female Player
2.4.1 This player is selected by the selectors present at the tournament or
by the committee nominated in 2.1.1
2.5 The Most Improved Female Player
2.5.1 This player is selected as mentioned above.
2.6 Gary Thomson Trophy – the Best overall result
2.6.1 The intention is to award the trophy to the province achieving the
best overall results at Jarvis/Kaplan Cups.
2.6.2 Rules
a) In order to qualify each province must be represented by 3
or more teams.
b) Points are allocated according to the final position in each
section, eg winner 1 point, second 2 points, third 3 points etc.
c) A “weighted average” is then applied to each team’s points
as follows:
A province with 4-6 teams x 1.5
A province with 1-3 teams x 1.8
d) The accumulated scores are then divided by the number of
teams entered by each province, which determines the
average points per team for that province.
e) The province with lowest average wins the trophy.
2.7 Seccie de Villiers Award – Jarvis Cup
2.7.1 The award is conferred on a player in any section who:
• displays outstanding standards of sportsmanship on court
• promotes the general well-being of Jarvis Cup by willingly undertaking marking duties, and supporting provincial team-mates
• participates willingly and with good grace in all Jarvis functions
2.7.2 The adjudicators of this award are:
the tournament referee
the president of the host province
the president of Squash South Africa or an appointed nominee
2.8 Clifton-Parks Award – Kaplan Cup
2.8.1 The award is conferred on a player in any section who:
• displays outstanding standards of sportsmanship on court
• assists in the general well being of the Kaplan Cup
• willingly undertakes marking duties, supports and encourages team-mates
• holds the spirit of the Kaplan Cup in high regard
2.8.2 The adjudicators of this award are:
The Disputes Committee
2.9 The Best province
2.9.1 This award is conferred on the province which:
• responds timeously to all requests for response from
the organizing committee
• submits team names timeously
• pays levies and other requested fees timeously
• by prompt responses and considerate co-operation
assists the organizing committee
2.9.2 The adjudicators of this award are:

Section 3 Disciplinary Procedures
1 All participants must comply with Rule 17 of the WSF Rules
2 Any contravention must be reported immediately in writing to the Tournament Referee who must decide upon what action should be taken.
3 The Tournament Referee shall investigate any infringement and adjudicate on any query which is presented in writing to him/her
3.1 The Tournament Referee shall convene a meeting of the Disputes
Committee.
Section 4 Media
1 TV Coverage
If this is obtained it is recommended that:
a) The Tournament Convenor should consult with National Director regarding coverage from the previous year.
a The company to film and the presenter need to be
discussed
b) The Tournament Convenor must have an on sight meeting with the producer and cameraman prior to the event.
c) A written report of this meeting must be completed and given to the producer in case of misunderstandings and unrealistic perceptions.
d) Cameras can take up a huge amount of space in the gallery and the positioning of the cameras needs to be decided upon
prior to the final.
e) Lighting facilities need to be carefully investigated and
discussed.
f) The producer and the cameraman need to understand the
order of play and matches on the final day.
g) The Tournament Director must ensure that all details and
requests from the TV crew are fulfilled.
h) The Tournament Convenor must realize that it is a
highlights package of the event and not a promotion for the
host province.
i) Should the event not be in the Gauteng area, the
Tournament Director must provide the producer with all
necessary information eg up to date results: log positions:
pen pictures: previous results.
2 Print and radio
i) Squash South Africa will send out regular general
information prior to the event.
During the event Squash South Africa will send daily
reports with full results.
ii) Each province usually has its own contacts with its
local media and they are encouraged to get these contacts
involved. eg local weekly newspapers or daily papers and
radio stations eg Radio Jakaranda, East Coast Radio
ii.i If a host province does not have these contacts, it is
encouraged to make them during the year it hosts.
iii) Once the event is in progress all results MUST be sent to Squash South Africa daily as soon as possible after each session is completed.
iii.i The format should be as follows:

B DEFINITIONS
Ties are between opposing teams
Matches are between individual players
Tournament Committee is the committee appointed by the host
province to organize the event.
Tournament Convenor is the person appointed to convene the
committee.
Tournament Director is responsible for ensuring that both playing
and change room facilities are in good order and that all necessary
equipment eg balls, scoresheets, pencils, result cards etc are distributed
and collected.
Tournament Referee is the convenor of the Disputes Committee.
He/she must ensure that all matches start on time and use his/her
discretion in imposing the necessary penalties. He/she must adjudicate
any disputes regarding marking and refereeing. He/she must
adjudicate any violations of Rule 17.
Disputes Committee is the committee, which considers and decides
upon any dispute or issue arising out of or connected with the playing
or which is referred to it for a decision.
It shall consist of 5 persons who shall be elected from:
a) Captains, members or managers present at the meeting.
b) A province may have only 1 representative
c) At least 1 member shall be a woman
d) The Tournament Referee is the convenor
C Championship Organisation
1 Accommodation
If the rates are reasonable, one venue is recommended particularly
for lines of communication.
This facilitates arrangements if that venue can also be used for the
Captain’s Meeting, the opening and the final function.
If one venue is not feasible then a choice of venues in close
proximity is recommended.
The host province should inform provinces as soon as possible of
the details and the provinces must make their bookings and they are
responsible for the payments thereof.
2 Venues
When selecting a venue the following should be considered:
* Number of courts needed :
Jarvis Cup for each round if 8 teams per section 4 courts per
section are needed.
Kaplan Cup – the number of courts needed per section depends
on the entry.
In areas where the number of courts are limited sessions need to
be arranged.
eg morning Men’s B and C sections: Women’s B section
afternoon Men’s and Women’s A sections
It has been recommended that the Men’s and Women’s A
sections be played at the same venue.
If possible Men’s B and Women’s B together with the Men’s C
at a second session.
* Condition of courts – floor, lighting etc
* Change- room facilities
* Parking facilities
* Refreshment facilities
* Spectator facilities
* Accessability
The Tournament Director must ensure that the Club is fully
aware of their responsibilities:
The courts must be cleaned and swept daily.
Should the courts become slippery during the day’s play someone
must be on duty to sweep and the necessary cleaning equipment
must be available.
Spare neon tubes must be available.
Arrangements must be made if the lighting is on a time switch.
Water in water coolers must be regularly replaced.
The change rooms must be cleaned regularly.
Toilet rolls/soap etc must be available.
A telephone must be available in case of an emergency.
3 Functions
The following functions are recommended:
* Welcoming Function on the evening of the day preceding the
first day’s play.
* The Awards Dinner
The costs of the above to be included in the levy.
It has become customary for Happy Hour to be held daily.
Provinces have organized other functions on two evenings leaving
one evening free.
The costs of these functions can be included in the levy
It is accepted practice that partners be charged for any function
attended.
Early deadlines must be given for such requests and careful
administration is needed to ensure that the host province obtains
the payments.
4 Photographs
It is recommended that photographs be taken on the Sunday.
The cost is included in the levy.
5 Practice Courts
Provision must be made for practice courts on the Sunday.

Kaplan Cup
The match schedule will depend on the number of teams and is played usually in a round robin.
With 6 teams this is 1 per day but with 7 is 2 on one day and with 8
two on two days.
7 Captains’ Meeting
7.1 The host province shall convene a Captain’s Meeting during the
afternoon of the day preceeding the Tournament.
7.2 It shall be attended by the Tournament Committee, the
Tournament Referee, the captains and managers of all teams
participating in the event.
7.3 Notice of the precise time and the venue shall be:
a) sent to the chairmen of the participating provinces at least one week prior to the commencement of the event.
b) posted at the hotel/s at which the participants will be staying
during the event.
7.4 The following matters shall be attended to:
a) the distribution of score sheets, result cards, balls,
handbooks and other handouts
b) the reading out of the final order of the teams by the
Tournament Committee convenor after he/she has
consulted with Squash South Africa
c) The election of the Disputes Committee
d) The announcement of the Selection Committee to adjudicate the awards.
e) The giving of the notice of the times and venue for the taking of team photographs
f) The notification of a Tournament Referee for each of the playing venues.
g) Any other matter as may be necessary for the smooth and successful running of the event
8 Letters/Newsletters
7.5 Letter informing province of accommodation
7.5.1 A letter informing participating provinces of the availability of
accommodation and the deadline for making bookings must be
sent by the host province by beginning of February at the latest.
7.6 Newsletter
7.6.1 This has become an extremely effective means of
communication.
7.6.2 It is recommended that at least 2 or 3 be sent out.

8 Website
8.1 This is an extremely effective means of communication but it
should be regularly updated
9 Sponsors
9.1 PricewaterhouseCooopers
Since 2003 PricewaterhouseCoopers has been the naming
sponsor.
9.1.1 The host province needs to liaise with Mrs van Buynder
regarding the sponsorship.
9.1.2 The host province needs to communicate regularly with the
firm’s designated representative.
9.1.3 The host province needs to ensure that the firm’s logo appears
on:
letterheads
score-sheets
result cards
shirts/tops as requested
advertisement in the brochure
tins on courts if needed
9.1.3.1Any other signage supplied by the firm to be displayed at the
playing and accommodation venues.
9.1.4 Representatives of the firm should be issued invitations to
watch the squash and to attend the functions.
9.2 Host provinces may approach other sponsors for sponsorship
provided that their line of business is not in opposition to that of
the main sponsor.
9.2.1 As much exposure as possible should be given to the exposure
of all firms’ signage
9.2.1.2 The host province must ensure that the sponsors are aware of
what exposure they can expect and what they will get.
10 Invitations
10.1 The host province should consider extending invitations to the
following to the Opening function and to watch the squash.

Sports Commission representative ( In 2005 these will both be SportCo)

The Mayor
Squash South Africa’s Ball suppliers: Dunlop, Wilson, Spalding

Sponsors
Depending on finances the above should be invited to the final
function.
11 The Awards Dinner
11.1 Speeches should be made by at least the following:
President of the Host province
A representative of Squash South Africa
A representative of the Main Sponsor
12 Medical support
12.1 Arrangements must be made so that the following are available
and have knowledge of the event in case there is an emergency:
Doctor, Dentist, Physiotherapist, Pharmacy, Medical Clinic or
hospital
D Clothing
Players may wear clothing of any colour or combination of colours.
Shirts or tops may carry:
a) The manufacturer’s trademark, symbol or name on one breast. The
display to be contained within an area not exceeding 20 square
centimetres in total and 10 centimetres in any one dimension.
b) Identification, on areas clearly separated from each other, on the
opposite breast to the manufacturer’s symbol and/or each arm as
follows:
i) Three sponsor’s displays (including PricewaterhouseCoopers’
logo) Each to be contained within an area not exceeding 40 square
centimeters in total and 10 centimetres in any one dimension.
c) A provincial identification title, plus a sponsor’s identification if required, on the back of the shirt or dress: the whole to be contained within an area not exceeding 300 square centimeters. The player’s name may be displayed within an area not exceeding 150 square centimeters.
Shorts or skirts may carry:
c) The manufacturer’s trademark, symbol or name on one side or leg contained within an area not exceeding 20 square centimeters in total and 10 centimetres in any one dimension.
NB The sponsor has the right to request players to wear shirts with the company logo particularly on the final day.
E Eligibility
i) Provinces regarded as the major provinces i.e Border, Easterns,
Eastern Province, Free State, Gauteng, Kwazulu Natal, Midlands,
Northerns, Western Province may enter.
ii) South African Country Districts select combined men’s and
women’s A teams at their annual inter-provincial.
ii.i Should there be a space they are entitled to enter B teams.
iii) The Exco may use their discretion to allow other teams to
participate should there be space eg Zimbabwe
iii.i Invitation teams and teams such as Zimbabwe may not win the
section.
iii.ii Players from the Zimbabwean team are not eligible for selection
for the Best of the Rest nor for any of the awards.
iv For player eligibility please consult the Rules.
F Duties of the Host Association
1 The host province is responsible for all costs of running the
Tournament.
1.1 In order to meet such expenditure the host province may impose a
levy, which shall be determined by the Executive of Squash South Africa after consultation with the host province.
1.1.1 A detailed Income and Expenditure Budget must be submitted to the Exco before the consultation
1.2 The host association shall prepare a budget showing the proposed income and expenditure in respect of the tournament and shall submit such budget to Squash South Africa not later than 6 weeks prior to the commencement of the Tournament.
2 The host province shall organise an Awards Dinner to be held on
the last day of the tournament.
3 Once the court allocation and schedule have been completed by the
host province, it must be submitted to Squash South Africa for
approval before the information is printed.
4 During the afternoon of the day preceding the start of the
Tournament, the Tournament Committee of the host province
shall convene a “Captains’ Meeting” of the captains and managers of all teams competing in the event.
4.1 Notice of the Meeting shall be sent to the chairpersons of all
participating provinces at least one week prior to the event and
shall be posted at the hotel where the participants are staying.
5 Drug Testing
5.1 Should the South African Drug Testing Body designate the event
for testing, the host association shall provide the venue and the
equipment which they request.
Appendix A Deadlines
1 1st February Squash South Africa writes to each province
advising them of the number of teams they are
entitled to and in which sections the teams are
placed
A copy of this notification is sent to the host
province.
Host province informs participating provinces of
available accommodation and gives deadline for
bookings.
2 1st March Players wishing to transfer must submit the
official transfer form signed by the chairperson of
both the province from which he/she is transferring
and the chairperson of the province to which he/she
is transferring.
3 31st March Each province shall confirm in writing which teams
it shall be entering.
Failure to do so will result in the forfeiture by that
province of its entitlement.
4 Not later than 6 weeks prior to the start of the event
The host province shall submit a proposed budget
to Squash South Africa, whose Exco may vary the
budget as they see fit.
4 11th June Provinces must submit all league and tournament
results played since the 16th May to Squash South
Africa so that the ranking may be as up to date as
possible.
5 14 days prior to the starting day All provinces shall submit to Squash
South Africa their team orders – 5 players per side
in their correct order.
As soon as possible hereafter the selectors will seed the teams and the
host province will be sent the seedings
6 7 days prior to the starting day Squash South Africa will circulate to
the provinces the accepted team orders.
The host province shall notify all participating
provinces of the venue and time of the Captains’
Meeting.
7 5 days prior to the starting day Provinces may send objections with
motivation to Squash South Africa.
