Gauteng Schools Squad Sessions for 2009
It has long been a goal of all involved in Gauteng Schools squash to improve the standard of play (as well as the numbers playing) and squad training sessions will go some way toward achieving this goal. Accordingly, we are announcing the schedule of training sessions for the first half of the year 2009 well in advance. We request that all players put these dates into their diaries for next year. Further sessions will be held after the IPT and these will be announced next year.

37 year old Rodney Durbach collected his third National squash title at the weekend when in a spectacular display of all round court dominance he outplayed second seeded Stephen Coppinger, the defending champion in straight games.

Coppinger, who will represent team South Africa at the World Games in July in Kaohsieng, Chinese Taipei, was the pre-tournament favourite. In the semi-finals he had a battle royale with Western Province’s Clinton Leeuw, edging through in five games. However, in the final he had no answer to Durbach’s onslaught. Durbach’s accurate length interspersed with pinpoint placings helped him pocket the first game 11-9. Points seesawed in the second game which Durbach took 16-12. Seeing the title which he last won in 2003 nearly within his grasp, Durbach lifted his attack, winning the game 11-7.

Presently coaching and mentoring Coppinger, Durbach seems to have found the catalyst he needed to return to the form that took him to number 23 on the world rankings.

The women’s title went to Tenille Swartz who is making a successful return to the courts after a year long lay-off as a result of an injury. Swartz was always in command in he straight game victory over defending champion Farrah Stern of Northerns.
